free and open-source tools for analog filmmaking

About

sixteenmillimeter.com is a project started by Matt McWilliams in 2009 with the purpose of providing free and open designs for working with analog movie film. All hardware and software on this site is offered without cost and without restriction on use.

As use of analog film in cinema has moved from the state of the art in commercial production to smaller-scale artistic practice, mass manufacturing of tools has waned and prices have increased on the existing supply. By utilizing desktop fabrication techniques like 3D printing and CNC manufaturing, tools for using analog film can be created cheaply and in small batches. Sharing designs digitally allows filmmakers to create hard-to-get tools and parts without physical shipping, storage or large-scale production. Sharing the source files for those designs enables people to modify them to their will.
